DAD VAIL HEADQUARTERS’ ORGANIZATION REMAINING IN PHILADELPHIA; WILL STAGE 2010 DAD VAIL REGATTA ON NAVESINK RIVER IN NJ AFTER A 70 YEAR INTERVAL
PHILADELPHIA, PA (November 17, 2009) – Officials of the Dad Vail Regatta, America’s largest collegiate rowing event, announced following a meeting with Philadelphia officials that the organization will continue to be headquartered in the City, though the 2010 venue for the Dad Vail Regatta will be the Navesink River race course in Rumson, New Jersey. Dad Vail crews, which have continuously raced on the Schuylkill River since 1953, last rowed on the Navesink in 1939, said race officials.
Dad Vail President Jim Hanna said he reaffirmed at the meeting that the regatta will always consider the Schuylkill River its headquarters’ home for the event but that various factors, primarily economic in nature, prompted the decision to relocate to the Navesink for the 2010, two-day competition.
“Rumson New Jersey representatives approached us after learning that we were in a financial bind and made a very compelling proposal to host the event in 2010,” explained Hanna. “Their support will actually allow us to avoid large increases in registration fees to participating crews while continuing to benefit the Philadelphia community rowing programs; the fact that the Dad Vail can return to Rumson after a 70-year hiatus is an added bonus for that region and, most importantly, for our competitive collegiate rowers.”
He added that the regatta officials told Philadelphia representatives, in 2010, Dad Vail will continue to support the Philadelphia minority rowing program, funded by the regatta for the last several years. It will also continue the annual regatta poster contest it sponsors for the public and parochial schools. Sharp declines in corporate sponsorship and corporate competition revenue, coupled with increases in regatta staging expenses in 2009 contributed to the event’s deficit position when looking ahead to the 2010 edition. With hundreds of colleges and thousands of rowers participating, the Dad Vail board needed to make a venue decision before the end of November to provide notice to the teams.
